Missed Period Not Pregnant

There are many explanations to a missed period when someone is not pregnant.

In very many women pregnancy is usually the major cause of missing a period and most of them will take a pregnancy test to make sure that they are not pregnant. There are however other reasons and they are as follows:

-If you are a mother that is breastfeeding your child in most cases, you may miss your period but this is not to say that you cannot get pregnant because ovulation still continues to take place.

-If a woman has stress and mostly emotional stress, they will have a missed period; and if they are trying to get pregnant, it may also be difficult. Avoiding the stressful situations will make the periods to resume almost immediately.

-Use of contraceptives whether the tablets, injections or implants interferes with the hormones in the body and most women using these contraceptives miss there periods regularly.

-Some other kind of medications like those used to treat cancer, thyroid and chemotherapy medicine cause amenorrhea.

-Hormonal imbalance and excess bleeding.

-Eating a diet that is not balanced or is lacking the important nutrients like iron.

-Malnourished women, women with eating disorder like anorexia or underweight women also have missed periods.

-Rigorous workouts or engaging in sports that are too athletic

-Being sick for extended periods of time or having a chronic disease like TB may delay your period but once health has been regained the periods return to normal.

-Tumors lead to the production of prolactin that interferes with the menstrual cycle.

If you discover that you have missed a period and you are not pregnant, it would be important to seek medical attention so that the doctor may take a test to determine the underlying cause. Only a qualified gynecologist can properly diagnose amenorrhea and he may also warn you to look out for other signs like headaches, vision problems, and loss of hair and breast secretions.

The doctor in most cases will put the woman under progestin medication for 6 to10 days to see whether it will trigger the periods to return. He will do this if he determines that the amenorrhea was as a result of a low estrogen level. He may also take a blood test to detect whether the thyroid glands have some kind of disease that could be interfering with the cycle. The treatment will de quite simple and if you follow the doctors instructions, the period will resume in no time.
